Today was a busy day on the farm, it was the day that the chickens were taken to be processed. It started of at 4:30 a.m. when me, my wife and son went out to crate the chickens up. We started so early because the chickens get less stressed out if you handle them when it is dark. It took us about an hour to get them all loaded up and ready to, go then off to the processing plant they went. Processing day brings mixed emotions here. On one hand its great to replenish the freezer with the best chicken I can grow and on the other hand we raise chickens because we love having them around and its not easy to say goodbye to these beautiful birds that we've put so much time an effort into.
The people at the processing plant we're great. They were professional, respectful and concerned about the chickens. They did a fantastic job and all the chickens were ready for pickup in the afternoon.
This years batch looks excellent. Our average size bird is 5.7lbs. Because they were bigger than anticipated I was able to readjust my pricing and I have changed it from $6.00/lb to $4.75/lb for those interested in buying chickens. We will have fresh chickens will have fresh chickens available for the rest of the week, then we will be selling frozen chickens until they sell out.
